SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities And Communities
Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Cities are hubs for ideas, trade, culture, science, productivity, social development and much more. At their best, cities have enabled people to develop socially and economically. With the number of people living in cities expected to reach 5 billion by 2030, it is important that effective urban planning and management practices are in place to meet the challenges of urbanization.
There are many challenges in managing cities in a way that continues to create jobs and wealth without putting a strain on land and resources. Widespread urban challenges include traffic congestion, lack of resources for basic services, lack of adequate housing, infrastructure wear and tear and increasing air pollution.
Challenges of rapid urbanization processes, such as safe and orderly waste management in cities, can be overcome by continuing to develop cities while improving the use of resources and reducing pollution and poverty. One example is the expansion of municipal waste collection. There must be a future in which cities provide opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transport and more.
