Lecture series & guided tour „Understanding the Universe“

Lecture series on the experiments at the world’s largest particle accelerator

On the Polyterrasse at ETH Zurich, the exhibition „The Code of the Universe“ offers a visually stunning insight into particle physics and research at CERN until 15 October. In addition, between 20 September and 11 October 2023, four public lectures will explore the clarified and unclarified questions of the universe and give a broad audience an in-depth insight into the experiments at the world’s largest particle accelerator.

Find out how the collisions of the smallest particles can be made visible, why the findings of the experiments are also important for your everyday life and what questions the researchers are working on. Let yourself be infected by the enthusiasm of the lecturers and ask them questions.

28 September, 18.30 hrs
ETH Zürich, Rämistrasse 101, 8092 Zürich, Hörsaal HG E3:
Quarks, Higgs and Co.: News from the Large Hadron Collider
Prof. Dr Rainer Wallny, Head of the Institute for Particle and Astrophysics, ETH Zurich

The event is held in German.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European particle physics research centre CERN near Geneva is the largest scientific instrument ever built. With this particle accelerator, protons are made to collide at the highest energies in order to create the building blocks of matter, the elementary particles, and to study their interactions. In 2012, the LHC succeeded in detecting the Higgs boson, the last building block of the so-called Standard Model of particle physics, which plays a fundamental role in the structure of matter. Despite this great success, many fundamental questions of particle physics remain open, which the lecture will address.

On the lecture days, young researchers will also guide visitors through the exhibition „The Code of the Universe“. Participation free of charge and without registration, from 5.45 p.m. to approx. 6.15 p.m. each day. Meeting point: directly at the exhibition, Polyterrasse
