Lecture series & guided tour „Understanding the Universe“

-

Lecture series on the experiments at the world’s largest particle accelerator

On the Polyterrasse at ETH Zurich, the exhibition „The Code of the Universe“ offers a visually stunning insight into particle physics and research at CERN until 15 October. In addition, between 20 September and 11 October 2023, four public lectures will explore the clarified and unclarified questions of the universe and give a broad audience an in-depth insight into the experiments at the world’s largest particle accelerator.

Find out how the collisions of the smallest particles can be made visible, why the findings of the experiments are also important for your everyday life and what questions the researchers are working on. Let yourself be infected by the enthusiasm of the lecturers and ask them questions.

Programme

20. September, 18.30 Uhr
ETH Zürich, Rämistrasse 101, 8092 Zürich, Hörsaal HG E3:
What do the Higgs boson and early Alzheimer’s detection have in common?
Prof. Dr. Günther Dissertori, Rector of ETH Zurich

The event is held in German.

At the international research centre CERN near Geneva, the universe is explored in miniature. The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is the largest particle accelerator in the world. The ring-shaped tube with a circumference of just under 27 kilometres lies about 100 metres underground. A few years ago, the famous Higgs boson was detected there. The particle physicists had developed special detectors for this discovery. The technology required for this from basic research can also be used for modern imaging procedures in medicine.

On the lecture days, young researchers will also guide visitors through the exhibition „The Code of the Universe“. Participation free of charge and without registration, from 5.45 p.m. to approx. 6.15 p.m. each day. Meeting point: directly at the exhibition, Polyterrasse
